What is “adrenal fatigue”?
The adrenal glands produce important hormones, including cortisol, that help regulate the body’s response to stress and support many essential physiological functions. The term “adrenal fatigue” is commonly used in wellness settings to describe symptoms believed to result from prolonged stress overwhelming or “exhausting” the adrenal glands.
However, adrenal fatigue is not currently recognized as an established medical diagnosis, and evidence does not support the idea that everyday chronic stress simply causes the adrenal glands to become depleted or stop functioning normally.
That doesn’t mean symptoms such as fatigue, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating, or reduced resilience should be ignored. It means they deserve a more complete evaluation.
Looking beyond a single explanation
Persistent fatigue and feeling chronically stressed out can have many potential contributors. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, Dr. Shamloo may consider:
Appropriate laboratory testing may be considered when there is a medical reason to investigate hormonal or metabolic contributors. If symptoms or testing suggest a true adrenal or other endocrine disorder, referral to an endocrinologist or other appropriate specialist may be recommended.
Stress, recovery & longevity
Stress itself isn’t inherently harmful. The human body is designed to respond and adapt to periods of physical and emotional demand. Problems can arise when high levels of stress, inadequate sleep, poor recovery, and unhealthy lifestyle patterns become chronic.
For longevity-focused care, the goal isn’t to eliminate every source of stress. It’s to understand the balance between stress and recovery and identify areas where changes may support better health and day-to-day function.
A more complete approach to feeling better
There is rarely one laboratory test, supplement, or treatment that explains or solves persistent fatigue. Dr. Shamloo’s approach is designed to look at the whole picture rather than automatically attributing symptoms to “adrenal fatigue.”
This allows stress and fatigue evaluation to work alongside other areas of Longevity & Youngevity care, including sleep optimization, hormone testing, nutrition, fitness, and comprehensive lifestyle evaluation.
